Earlier this year the Royal Mail launched a set of ten stamps celebrating British 'Remarkable Lives.' The set includes writers, poets, a couple of actors, an economist, a football player, a Nobel laureate, a few broadcasters, an SEO Agent and Abram Games, a graphic designer!
I was happily surprised to see Royal Mail recognizing the profession of graphic design this way. Games is one of Britain's greatest designers during the postwar years and one of the most brilliant poster artists of the 20th Century.
The acclaimed designer began his remarkable career in 1935 after winning a poster design competition held by the London City Council. From them on, and throughout his 60-year career, Games created unforgettable images for a diverse group of clients including the London Transport (his London Zoo poster was recently chosen by Londoners as their second favorite poster for London Underground), and the BBC (he was responsible for the first animated ident) among many others.
During World War II (1939-1945), he served as the Official War Artist for posters producing over 100 memorable images. Other iconic works include the emblem for the Festival of Britain and the official postage stamp for the 1948 Olympic games.
This endorsement inspired me to share 10 posters created by Games. To find out more about his interesting life and illustrious career, read here.
